It’s no secret that the Bakcou Mule is something of a favorite among hunters. It made our list of the top 11 eBikes for hunters in 2023, and you’ve probably got a buddy who won’t shut up about theirs. What makes it so special, though?
In a world loaded with eBikes for hunters, it can be tough to differentiate one from the others.
Well, we’re going to talk about why the Bakcou Mule is such an excellent choice for hunters. By the time we’re done, you’ll be wondering how you made it this far without one of your own.
From appearances alone, you can see that there’s a lot of great things about the Mule. Everything from the sleek design to the little rack out back makes it something you’d be proud to ride through the brush.
We won’t leave it at that, though. We’re going to dive deeply into why this is such a great platform for hunters.
The Mule is the host of the Bafang Ultra Mid-Drive motor, which is affectionately known as the diesel engine of eBike motors. The name comes from the durability of this unit. Where many others have hardships, the Mule excels.
It’s an exceptionally robust design that’s not going to tremble in the face of hard use. When you’re riding over rough terrain to your stand, it offers the kind of dependability you need.
Diesels are tough, but they aren’t known for being quick. After all, your diesel truck could pull a house over, but it’s not keeping up with sports cars. That’s not the case for the Mule.
The Mule comes out bucking with its 750-watt or 1,000-watt motor that’ll easily get you, your gear, and your take up to speed on any terrain. Speaking of speed, it’s capable of topping out at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. That’s more than enough to get you into your favorite spot when the action’s good.
Speaking of robust, things get heavier as they get beefier. That’s a real problem for hunters because you need everything to be as strong as it can get. The last thing you need is for your eBike to fail in the middle of a hunt, leaving you stranded in the woods.
The motor isn’t all that’s tough about the Mule, though. The frame is also of a rather ridged design that’s more than strong enough to take the abuse you’ll throw at it one the way to your stand.
But because it’s made of aluminum, there is no excess bulk. In fact, the mule weighs in at around 68 pounds, which is comparable to anything in its class.
Nope. You won’t need to worry too much about running out of battery life between your truck and the blind. The Mule’s capability to reach 82 miles of travel before needing a recharge is way more than you’ll need under normal circumstances and just might get you out of a sticky situation.
Now, we know that there’s the caveat that you can only go that far in special circumstances, but it’s still not bad, especially if your destination is only a couple of miles off the beaten path.
That’s right. It’s got air fork suspension. That might be a standard for hunting eBikes these days, but that means it’s a feature worth mentioning.
The addition of air fork shocks helps this bike remain comfortable, no matter how long you’re off riding. After a long day of stumbling over rocks to see a whole lot of nothing, a smooth, relaxing ride to the truck is exactly what you’ll need.
The inclusion of fat tires is always essential. These tires contribute to the comfortable ride of the bike as well as increase off-road performance. Think about it. Wider tires mean more contact with the ground.
Only, these aren’t the average eBike fat tires. They’re Maxxis Minions. Yes. The same Maxxis that makes killer off-road tires for your 4x4. That kind of experience is a key ingredient for making the best possible tires for hunting eBikes.
Perhaps the idea of adding camo paint to your eBike is a little overkill. Why wouldn’t you want to, though? Everything else you take hunting—your optics, your clothes, your gun, and your backpack—are usually camo.
With two camo patterns available, you can surely find the pattern that best matches the part of the great North American Wilderness you’re exploring. If camo isn’t your preference, matte black and desert tan are also available.
That’s not all the Mule has to offer. A step-through version of the Mule is also available, which may be just what you need. It has everything you now love about the Mule, with the additional benefits of a step-through frame.
Bakcou promotes this feature as the obvious upgrade for shorter hunters, but it’s something anyone can appreciate. You don’t have to bring your leg up as high to mount the bike by lowering the standover height.
That means everyone will have a much easier time getting on the bike after a long day in the woods, especially if you’re loaded up with range-inhibiting gear.
The Bakcou Mule is an obvious contender for any hunter. It has everything you’ll need to get in and out of the woods and then some. We highly encourage you to take the time and research all of your options, though. After all, what works for one hunter might not do so well for another.
